Neutral Here, Neutral There….Neutral, Neutral Everywhere!

How to work with neutrals in your room.

All to often, I meet clients who say they want to add color to their rooms, but when I present to them the color presentation, they get nervous and opt to go with beige. Now, I don’t necessarily hate the color beige, but it do find it to be the “safe” color choice for my clients and I know that for builders, “builder’s beige” is the next cheapest paint color to white.

So if you’re stuck on beige, whether it’s because it’s the safe choice or maybe because you are a renter and are not allowed to paint your walls, let’s explore how we can make beige a little more exciting and add a splash of color to your rooms.

Here in this living room the right amount of orange to give this neutral living room the right splash of color. You can use any color in your room, the secret is not to go overboard with your choices. Two pillows, a bouquet of flowers on the mantel and side table was enough for this living room to stand out!

Have you thought about utilizing two neutral colors in one room? If not, try gray and beige. Two very neutral colors, but together complement each other nicely with just the slight amount of contrast. The navy blue sectional and print ottoman provides the color in the room without it being overbearing!

Here’s another blending of neutrals, ice blue walls and beige furniture. Two neutrals that complement each other as well as provide a feeling of calm in this living room.

A bold sunburst mirror along with bright green lamps and wing backed chairs is a nice companion to the neutral walls and enough for family and friends to say….WOW!

Have Fun with Blue and Yellow Rooms

ImageI recently attended a wedding of a good friend and the color theme for this wedding was white, yellow and royal blue. The wedding bouquet was absolutely gorgeous and as I sat there enjoying this wonderful day for my friend and his bride, I couldn’t help but think about how wonderful a room designed in these three colors would look.

Blue is a color is we all associate with, whether it’s a beautiful blue sky, the ocean and the calming sense we feel with the color blue. Just as the color yellow makes is feel joyous, excited and who doesn’t feel good when you look up and see and feel the warm rays of the sun.

The combination of the two colors, cool and warm can make for a very vivid and fun living space.

ImageThe richness of this royal blue living room paired with the black and white print with yellow as the accent color gives this room a dynamic appearance.

ImageYellow, blue and white provides a vibrancy for this child’s room to help development creativity and hours for fun.

ImageHighlight a hallway with the brightness of royal blue with slightest hints of yellow for the accent colors.

ImageOn the lighter side of the color combination, a paler version of royal blue and yellow provides a calm and soothing feel for this living room with a hint of warmth from the yellow accents.

ImageMake dinner fun and inviting. Add a royal blue table to make anything you serve stand out appetizing. Highlight your room with painted royal blue doors.

Where’s the Romance? Find it in the Bedroom! Decorating ideas to create a romantic bedroom

There are few things more fulfilling than decorating your home to suit your own personal tastes. When it comes to your own relaxation, taking the time to add a romantic touch to your bedroom can be a very rewarding experience for you and your partner. This is the room where the “magic” happens, so let’s take a look and see what you can do to set the mood and light the spark.

Nothing adds more flair to a bed than a canopy; a shear white fabric that hangs like gossamer threads and catches the glow from the moon. Now that’s a way to light up your room with a virginal promise about to be broken.

If that all seems a little too minimalist and sterile, then perhaps a more modern take is what you should try; headboards are no longer just plain wooden book-ends, they now come in striking shapes and glorious patterns and colors, which can allow them to be the regal centerpiece of your bedroom space. This headboard by Tina Mellino add the right touch for a romantic bedroom setting!

Another dramatic design statement is the four poster bed, with its ornately carved posts, each design more stunning than the next. Susan Hollis picked this elegantly designed headboard for this bedroom. But if you would rather have a more straightforward design to your posts, then adding a canopy as Barry Dixon did in this bedroom. The fabric framed over the top can provide a touch of class and elegance, whilst also providing a splash of color, depending which way you decide to go with the canopy; plain and simple, or patterned and daring.

If you are mostly happy with the current design of your space, but want to make a subtle change, then making upgrades in the lighting can do just that. The muted glow from a bedside lamp can completely change the original coloring and look of your room with the simple flick of a switch. Alternatively, adding a dimmer setting to your existing lighting can transform the room into whichever mood you want to set for the evening.

Whether you decide to go for subtleness or grand, make sure your bedroom is a reflection of who you are and your personal taste! Make sure it is a room you can’t wait to come home to!

Be Different….Be Unexpected! Unusual elements to add to your living room decor

However you use your living room, whether it’s a place where the family gets together to watch TV, place games or whether it is a show piece for your friends and family to admire, stand out from the ordinary and be different with elements you will not normally find in a typical living room décor.

As we see in the picture below, Designer Jonathan Adler uses the most unusual items in this living room to create a room that is out of the ordinary.

Items such as a life-size ceramic dog and a bronze palm tree to name a few all blend together well to create a unique but livable living room. There are more unusual elements in this living room, can you spot them?

Got sheep…? Surrealist sculptor François-Xavier Lalanne created these sheep ottomans. Up against the green carpeting and sofa, you have the feeling as if you are grazing in the meadow. What other animals would you add to this living room? If there is sheep, I think there should be a couple of cows…..

LOOK UP!!! The sky is falling…NOT! But interest is created by adding artwork to the ceiling. Designer Nina Seirafi does just that by adding this sculpture to the ceiling. Not only does she add visual interest, but she treats the ceiling as the fifth wall.

Here’s a clever way to teach your children the periodic table….make a coffee table out of it. This coffee table is created by The Element Collection/Element Displays. If you had this in your home, do you think your children would love you or hate you for it? But regardless of how they fell, it is an interesting piece of furniture and sure to stir up conversation!, don’t you think?

And lastly, for my automobile enthusiastic, how about bringing your car into your living room? Designers Andrzej Sapierzyski and Lukasz Siódmok created these interesting sofas made from car parts. Hmmm….looks like a corvette.
